R.I.P. Poly Styrene posted by FRANKKUBB

Punk singer Poly Styrene, former singer with the X Ray Spex, has died at the age of 53 after suffering from cancer.

She was one of the first female punk icons, whose unorthodox yet infectious style was highly influential.

Real name Marianne Elliot-Said, she had cancer of the spine and breast.

A statement on her official Twitter feed said: "We can confirm that the beautiful Poly Styrene, who has been a true fighter, won her battle on Monday evening to go to higher places."

Poly Styrene formed her band after watching the Sex Pistols perform on Hastings Pier on her 18th birthday and became known for her unpolished vocals and energetic rallying cries against consumerism and environmental destruction.

X Ray Spex's signature tune was Oh Bondage Up Yours!, a riotous rejection of social and gender norms that began with Poly Styrene's spoken line: "Some people think little girls should be seen and not heard."

Poly Styrene released her third solo album last month The band released just one album, Germ Free Adolescents, in 1978, before splitting up.

The singer went on to record a more subtle and subdued solo album, Translucence, in 1980, before retreating from the music industry to join the Hare Krishnas.

She moved into a Krishna temple in Hertfordshire with her daughter, and struggled with bipolar disorder.

Boy George - who once tried to break her out of the temple - was among those paying tribute on Twitter.

He wrote: "I was a fan of Poly before I got to know her, she was a Krishna follower too, oh bless you Polly you will be missed! Legend!"

Former Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock praised the "general joie de vivre nuttiness" shown in songs like Oh Bondage Up Yours!

X Ray Spex, with Poly Styrene, right, recorded just one album before splitting up "She wouldn't kow-tow to even what the punk fashions should be, I think that's what that song is about," he told BBC 6 Music.

"I did see her not that long ago so it's sad. Again, somebody from the punk rock scene has died far too young and it's a loss."

TV presenter Jonathan Ross said his first concert was an X Ray Spex gig, adding that the singer had "changed lives".

Poly Styrene occasionally re-emerged into the limelight, and released her third solo album, Generation Indigo, last month.

"I know I'll probably be remembered for Oh Bondage Up Yours!" she told 6 Music last month. "I'd like to remembered for something a bit more spiritual."

The Fakes ~ Real Fiction 1994 posted by FRANKKUBB

One of the most rare and highly sought after of all Riot Grrrl records, this is the infamous REAL FICTION album by THE FAKES. Only a handful of these were pressed Chainsaw Records from Portland (leaders of the Riot Grrrl movement) and the band contains many important players including Kathleen Hanna of BIKINI KILL. Record contains 19 brilliant tracks and remain in near mint condition. An important piece of Riot Grrrl/Queercore history and a truly rare collectable that will continue to grow in value. Doubtful you'll see this one again as so few copies are known to exist!

Heavens To Betsy - Rare/Lives 1992-1993 posted by FRANKKUBB

Heavens to Betsy was a punk band from Olympia, Washington. The members were Tracy Sawyer on drums and occasionally bass guitar, and Corin Tucker on guitar and vocals. One of their first appearances was at the International Pop Underground Convention organized by independent record label K Records in 1991. For one night an all-female bill, dubbed "Love Rock Revolution Girl Style Now" commanded the stage with Heavens to Betsy, Bratmobile, Jean Smith of Mecca Normal and 7 Year Bitch appearing, an event that is widely considered one of the pivotal events in the inception of the Riot Grrrl movement. Their first record was a split single on K Records with Bratmobile, considered an essential Riot Grrrl recording. The band recorded three singles, produced one LP/CD, Calculated, and contributed to many compilations while they were together. These recordings are now sought after by collectors. One of these compilations, Free to Fight, also included a song contributed by the band Excuse 17, of which Carrie Brownstein was a member. Corin and Carrie began to play together, and when Heavens to Betsy disbanded in the mid 1990s, the two women founded Sleater-Kinney.

The Element Of Crime 'The Things You Do For Love' 1993 REPOST by FRANKKUBB

Original 1993 UK release on Soul Static Sound (UK) (catalog # soul 2), in handmade Picture Sleeve.

Raw, urgent and angry punk rock which transcends the whole riot grrrl thing to become of the absolute best punk records of the 90's imho... an incredible EP.

huggybearsite: This was a band which was together some time during Huggy Bear's existance. I don't know much about them except Chris sang, Jo and Dale from Blood Sausage traded bass duties, and Andy from Linus (they are on SOME HEARTS PAID TO LIE) played guitar and Daryl from Sister George played the drums and Layla from Skinned Teen did some rad back-ups. The Element of Crime 7" was supposed to be the first in a series of Huggy Bear offshoot 7" singles, but no others came after this one. Here is some more info I got from Layla: "Chris wrote the lyrics crouched down in the tube station we were waiting for Bratmobile to come. The studio was Toe Rag, which is the same place a lot of Billy Childish/Holly Go Lightly stuff was recorded, really rad old equipment and atmosphere too. It was a drunken party style recording, songs all written on the spur of the moment."

Xmal Deutschland 'Incubus Succubus' 12" 1983

Xmal Deutschland was a musical group from Hamburg, Germany. Founded in 1980 as an all-girl band, they became successful outside their native country. Vocalist Anja Huwe was often compared to contemporaries like Siouxsie Sioux ( Siouxsie & the Banshees). Xmal Deutschland last released an album in 1989.
1 Biography
Xmal Deutschland was formed in 1980 by Anja Huwe ( vocals), Manuela Rickers ( guitar), Fiona Sangsters ( keyboards), Rita Simon ( bass guitar) and Caro May ( drums) in Hamburg, Germany. Their first single, "Großstadtindianer" was released a year later on Alfred Hilsberg ’s ZickZack label. The band also contributed the song "Kälbermarsch" to the label compilation Lieber Zuviel Als Zuwenig (ZZ 45). Around this time Rita Simon was replaced by Wolfgang Ellerbrock .
In 1982 the band released the Goth classic "Incubus Succubus". Drummer Caro May was replaced by Manuela Zwingmann the same year. While German audiences were less than receptive at first, a United Kingdom tour opening for the Cocteau Twins resulted in a label deal with independent label 4AD. Their debut album, Fetisch and the singles "Qual" and "Incubus Succubus II" were released in 1983Events January January 1 Beat Raaflaub became Basel Boys Choir's new conductor January 1 the ARPANET officially changes to use the Internet Protocol, creating the Internet. Xmal Deutschland also opened for The Stranglers at a concert at Wembley Stadium in London. Their follow-up album, Viva was recorded in Hamburg and was released in 1987, followed by the single "Sickle Moon". Viva contains a large number of English lyrics, among others a poem by Emily Dickinson.
After the release of Viva, Manuela Rickers, Fiona Sangster and Peter Bellendit left the group. Anja Huwe and Wolfgang Ellerbrock continue to work with Frank Z . (Abwärts) on guitar. Producer Henry Staroste played keyboards, and German studio drummer Curt Cress completed the line-up that would record the 1989 LP Devils and the singles "Dreamhouse" and "I’ll be near you". This also proved to be the last release of Xmal Deutschland, showing a change of direction towards mainstream pop. 1990 saw a few scattered live appearances by the group, but eventually the group split up.

Phantom Pregnancies (near) Complete Discography

NOTE...Song titles are in order by L.P./E.P.
---------------------------------------------------
Phantom Pregnancies was a mysterious punk band that raided shows, played in pajamas, recorded their records on boom-boxes and had no real names. The Phantom Pregnancies were the leaders of the anti-digital movement, to the point that their track on a damaged goods CD comp is one minute of silence. It is rumored that Huggy Bear members were involved with the Phantom Pregnancies but it has never been 100% proven.
Rent Boy Assassin has more of a raw and urgent post-punk DIY sound, pretty stunning three tracks, comparable maybe to The Element Of Crime EP in intensity.

FROM WIKI

Frightwig was an all-women band from San Francisco, California in the 1980s who pioneered the riot grrrl movement and were very influential to its development. They often played at The Farm. They were known for inviting a male audience member on stage to "dance" during the song "A Man's Gotta Do What a Man's Gotta Do" and thereby publicly ridiculing him. Frightwig was composed of Cecilia Lynch, Deanna Ashley, Mia Levin, Susan Miller, Megan Page, Lynn Perko and Rebecca Tucker.

Spitboy "True Self Revealed" 1993

Wikipedia:
Spitboy was an American anarcho-punk band founded in San Francisco, California in the early 1990s by four women. Within their music they aggressively criticized patriarchy and gender roles.
The band was founded by drummer Michelle Gonzales (Todd), vocalist Adrienne Droogas, bassist Paula and guitarist Karin Gembus. Paula left the band before the release of the Rasana 7" EP and was replaced by Dominique Davison.

The band toured the United States, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Their records were released on prominent punk rock labels Lookout Records, Allied Recordings and Ebullition Records, including a split LP with the Chicago-based hardcore group Los Crudos.

After the breakup of the group, Davison, Gonzales and Gembus played together in the group Instant Girl, whose sound was less aggressive than that of Spitboy. Instant Girl released an LP on Allied Recordings. Droogas was briefly a member of the group Aus Rotten before moving to Richmond, Virginia. She also wrote columns for the punk zines Heartattack and Profane Existence. Davison is now an architect. Gonzales teaches English at Las Positas College in Livermore, California.

Huggy Bear Volume One

From Wikipedia,

During the course of their existence, they refused to be photographed or interviewed by mainstream press, nor gave their full names once they began releasing records formally. In spite of a major label bidding war, Huggy Bear stuck with Wiiija, an indie label.

“ The underground in London had deteriorated totally, there wasn't really much of an alternative . . . 'indie' just became an abstract term for a style of music, not ideas or values, 'cause they were all signing to major labels. The notion of selling out wasn't important. Punk rock wasn't important. Fanzines were seen as a sad joke, so we had to explain stuff that might have been obvious to American kids but was alien to young British kids. The reasons for being independent were snorted at.”

The strange thing was that Huggy Bear’s musical template was hardly revolutionary. It was a relatively straightforward mix between the twee, non-macho, post-C86 bands such as Heavenly and The Field Mice, caught up in the DIY cassette and fanzine culture emanating from labels such as Calvin Johnson’s K Records, and Bristol, England’s Sarah Records, and the noise/pop experimentation of the sonic overlords/ladies Lydia Lunch and Sonic Youth…with a little Fifties beat poetry thrown in. No, it wasn’t so much the music that was revolutionary, as what they did with it. Scratch that. Huggy Bear’s deliberately naïve, anti-societal approach to playing guitar—there is no right and wrong way to play guitar, to paint a picture, to view art—was revolutionary inasmuch as it challenged accepted mores, forced listeners to re-evaluate their entire approach to music.

Kiss Curl For The Kid's Lib Guerrillas (Wiija)
1. Derwin
2. Sizzlemeet
3. Concrete Life
4. Carnt Kiss

Her Jazz (Catcall/Wiija)
1. Her Jazz
2. Prayer
3. Pro No From Now

In a way, the act of declaring oneself a revolutionary is revolutionary in itself. Despite their musical leanings, Huggy Bear with their rudimentary anarcho-syndicalism, ideas of equal ‘prime movers’ (not leaders) and impassioned feminism had more in common with mischief-mongers and Government-baiters Crass than any of the toy rabbit-clutching bands that followed. One listen to the fury threatening to devour the songs alive on their Wiiija compilation Taking The Rough With The Smooch proves that.
