Crisis ~ Were All Jews And Germans 1997 posted by FRANKKUBB

Crisis started out in the late 70s with the rise of the British hardcore punk movement. They were at the forefront of the political take on punk, all of their songs being about the state of the UK and its government and anti Nazism (which will get interesting). They would release several singles, EPs and an LP. They were very comparable to and probably were on the bill with bands like Warsaw, UK Decay, The Royal Family (Dave Roberts), and numerous Crass camp bands. There was a re-release of their 7" and EP material on CD some years ago.

They took a different approach to punk, while the music was still aggressive, it was rhythmic, structured, and poetic - not merely powerchord thrash. After their split, Luke Rendall went on to Theatre of Hate, and Lester Jones played with Carcrash International (Dave Roberts/Sex Gang Children) and Quick Gas Gang (Andi Sex Gang), but most notably, Tony Wakeford and Douglas Pierce went on to form Death In June. The Death In June song "All Alone In Her Nirvana" was written by Doulas and Tony as a Crisis song. DIJ was one of the most acclaimed and collectable bands in a genre that escapes definition other than some sort of brilliant mix of apocalyptic folk gothic punk, with experimental elements using non traditional sounds and instruments. Their peers were bands like Psychic TV, Current 93, and Throbbing Gristle. Tony Wakeford split and created Sol Invictus a bit after his involvemnt with DIJ.

After Crisis, bands Death In June, Sol Invictus, and others came from the wreckage. The funny thing is, Crisis began as a dramatically anti-fascist band, but as time progressed, the members increasingly romanticized German WWII imagery and themes and the line between fascism blurred, DIJ often being referred to by those not in the know as a straight on Nazi band. The Crisis song "White Youth" was even at one point taken at face value by a member of the music press who didn't bother to listen to it. On a side note, the same thing happened and still happens with Black Flag's "White Minority", by those who don't know the song was sung by a Hispanic singer! The meaning behind Death In June's image is a whole other issue, which is well addressed in the book "Misery and Purity". [Source:

NON-Boyd Rice ' Easy Listening For Iron Youth'

NON is Boyd Rice: pioneer, instigator, prankster, misanthrope, esoterica authority, and all around jolly fellow. He wrote for The Modern Drunkard for chrissakes.

"Boyd Rice's tongue is firmly within cheek (then again, when isn't it?) with this compilation of his work from the 1980s -- among other personages, the album is dedicated to Vlad the Impaler (pictured on the front cover feasting among his victims), Charles Manson, and "the Hero of Green River." Easy Listening for Iron Youth has one big disadvantage for the newcomer -- namely, no information at all as to where the compositions came from originally. Credits for his various collaborators (including Coil, Tony Wakeford, and Rose McDowall) are mentioned, happily, but otherwise the interested newcomer will have to start scrounging websites to find out more. That problem aside, the compilation is a well-sequenced peek into Rice's mind, covering both his musical and thematic extremes, from swirling, ear-piercing classical loops to murky crypto-religious invocations and subtle variations on seemingly straightforward rhythms. An emphasis on sound qua sound predominates for all the details of the presentation; such songs as the minimal beat and repeating notes of "Rise," the distorted howling of "Carnis Vale," and the fascinating mechanical drone/squall Coil-co-write "Predator/Prey" revel in the possibilities. Moments like what sounds like a Nazi rally audience on "Conflagration" and the distorted horns and recitations on "Scorched Earth" aren't going to please anyone who looks first and foremost at Non as the spirit of Hitler come to life (ignoring the fact that, for instance, Rice notably leaves that name off his dedication list). It's the wryest and blackest of humor at points, the more so because the music itself is straightforwardly serious and unsettling. Perhaps the creepiest moment: "Eternal Ice," which reworks the melody of the Christmas carol standard "Silent Night" into a distinctly less Christian setting, yet all while retaining a chilling, central calm." - Ned Raggett

Death In June '93 Dead Sun Wheels' remastered 1993

Industrial innovators Death in June emerged in 1980 from the remnants of the punk unit Crisis, reuniting singer/multi-instrumentalist Douglas Pearce and bassist Tony Wakeford; drummer Patrick Leagas completed the original lineup, which made its live debut late the following year with an opening slot for the Birthday Party. The 12-inch "Heaven Street" soon followed, and in 1983 Death in June issued their first full-length effort, The Guilty Have No Pride; from the outset, the group was criticized for its adoption of fascist imagery, and charges of Nazism dogged Pearce throughout his career. Upon completing the Burial LP, Wakeford left the lineup to form Sol Invictus; following the release of 1985's Nada!, only Pearce remained, with Leagas exiting to form his own project, Sixth Comm. Beginning with the 1986 double album The World That Summer, Pearce continued Death in June primarily as a solo concern, aided by a revolving group of collaborators including Current 93's David Tibet, Boyd Rice and Coil's John Balance; the abrasive electronics and martial rhythms of early efforts gave way to an increasingly expansive sonic approach over the course of subsequent outings including 1987's Brown Book, 1989's The Wall of Sacrifice and 1992's But, What Ends When the Symbols Shatter?, the latter evoking Pearce's longstanding interest in traditional European folk music. The first British act to perform in Croatia following the outbreak of Yugoslavia's civil war, Death in June documented their experiences on 1993's Something Is Coming; subsequent efforts include 1995's Rose Clouds of Holocaust, 1997's Take Care and Control and 2000's Operation Hummingbird. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
