Following Broadcast frontwoman Trish Keenan's untimely passing to swine flu and pneumonia UK's Fact Magazine brought our attention to a stunning, 16-track mix CD of vintage psychedelic nuggets that Keenan made for a friend by the name of David Brewster just weeks before her death, in December 2010. Brewster posted a link to "Mind Bending Motorway Mix" on Fact over the weekend with the hope that others would share it with the world. In Brewster's own words:

“Trish Keenan from Broadcast passed away on Friday 14th January 2011, she was an amazing, talented woman and will be missed by many.

In December 2010 Trish sent me a mix CD she compiled, I never thanked her. Its called Mind Bending Motorway Mix and I want to share it with you, please pass the link on, share it far and wide, its a little tribute to a (as a friend referred to her today) exhilarating woman.

Manchester's own Holy Other touches down on Tri Angle with five sumptuous jams occupying the spooked space between R&B, techno and dark ambient**. It's tempting to call it witch-house, of course, but Holy Other's productions are so subtle and carefully wrought that we'd be doing him a huge disservice if we did. This music deserves to be taken on its own terms: as emotive and supremely evolved electronic music with a real force of personality. We're drawn in with 'Know Where', a sleepy-eyed, mid-paced groover that sketches out the Holy Other universe: hard-jerking drums, synth ambience, technoid bleeps, eerie vocal snatches; it's from this palette that he paints 'Yr Love' (think Kassem Mosse meets Hype Williams on a beach in Ibiza) and the similarly chugging 'With U' and 'Feel Something'. The EP's unmistakable centrepiece however is 'Touch' - it sounds like 2-step pitched-down and re-strung for Valium-munchers, Burial-esque vocal pressure meeting ultra-minimal, jeep-rocking claps and downshifting darkside synths in 10,000 leagues of reverb, making for a track as slickly cinematic as it is disorienting and plain RUDE. Put simply, it's the kind of twisted but oddly romantic R&B futurism which Tri Angle consistently excels at sourcing. Punk singer Poly Styrene, former singer with the X Ray Spex, has died at the age of 53 after suffering from cancer.

She was one of the first female punk icons, whose unorthodox yet infectious style was highly influential.

Real name Marianne Elliot-Said, she had cancer of the spine and breast.

A statement on her official Twitter feed said: "We can confirm that the beautiful Poly Styrene, who has been a true fighter, won her battle on Monday evening to go to higher places."

Poly Styrene formed her band after watching the Sex Pistols perform on Hastings Pier on her 18th birthday and became known for her unpolished vocals and energetic rallying cries against consumerism and environmental destruction.

X Ray Spex's signature tune was Oh Bondage Up Yours!, a riotous rejection of social and gender norms that began with Poly Styrene's spoken line: "Some people think little girls should be seen and not heard."

Poly Styrene released her third solo album last month The band released just one album, Germ Free Adolescents, in 1978, before splitting up.

The singer went on to record a more subtle and subdued solo album, Translucence, in 1980, before retreating from the music industry to join the Hare Krishnas.

She moved into a Krishna temple in Hertfordshire with her daughter, and struggled with bipolar disorder.

Boy George - who once tried to break her out of the temple - was among those paying tribute on Twitter.

He wrote: "I was a fan of Poly before I got to know her, she was a Krishna follower too, oh bless you Polly you will be missed! Legend!"

Former Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock praised the "general joie de vivre nuttiness" shown in songs like Oh Bondage Up Yours!

X Ray Spex, with Poly Styrene, right, recorded just one album before splitting up "She wouldn't kow-tow to even what the punk fashions should be, I think that's what that song is about," he told BBC 6 Music.

"I did see her not that long ago so it's sad. Again, somebody from the punk rock scene has died far too young and it's a loss."

TV presenter Jonathan Ross said his first concert was an X Ray Spex gig, adding that the singer had "changed lives".

Poly Styrene occasionally re-emerged into the limelight, and released her third solo album, Generation Indigo, last month.

"I know I'll probably be remembered for Oh Bondage Up Yours!" she told 6 Music last month. "I'd like to remembered for something a bit more spiritual."

Swans is an influential band from New York City, New York, United States, active from 1982 to 1997, reformed in 2010, led by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira. Marginally associated with the no wave scene at first, their original sound was slow and heavy, with live performances that were often so brutal and physical that in a number of instances certain audience members were made ill, police were called and venues were shut down. This early physical sound is possibly best heard on the live album Public Castration Is a Good Idea. Their initial style shifted a little by the time Swans released seminal twin albums Greed and Holy Money. The music had sped up, at times being even more punishing than their earlier output. Drum machines and samples were slightly more prominent. Michael Gira was joined vocally by Jarboe which gave the band a broader sonic range. Tracks featuring Jarboe were often quieter, even pretty, acting as counterpoint to the more harrowing themes on the albums. Over time, this style would come to dominate the Swans’ output, although they somehow seem to have been able to make a strummed acoustic guitar seem as brutal as their earlier amped-up assaults. The lush instrumentation of their albums from the late 1980s and the 1990’s anticipated the birth of post-rock. Swans eventually broke up in 1997; Gira went on to release some solo work, later forming the band The Angels of Light, who continue many of the themes and styles found in (later) Swans. Jarboe releases solo work and frequently works with other bands and artists; recently she released an album with Neurosis, a group clearly heavily influenced by Swans. The influence of Swans upon the music world is profound. Across their 15 years of existence, the various styles they explored gave birth to grindcore (Napalm Death, Nasum) modern “cinematic” post-rock (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mono), and atmospheric sludge metal (Isis, Neurosis). On January 2010 announced Swans reunion and working on new recordings. The song Jim recently added to the playlist at MySpace is an acoustic demo (solo at home) recording by Michael Gira. This, and many other new songs recorded in the same way comprise many of the new (rough versions) of songs under consideration, to be fleshed out on the coming new Swans album. Although the record was marketed through Enigma Records, very little seems to be known about this record or the label (American Standard) that it's on. It seems that the drummer, Mike Hirsch, runs a skate shop these days in Southern California. Darin Bond, who played the rototoms, is also the name of one of the members of late 90s/early 2000s garage punk band Deadites (I don't know if they are actually the same person, though). This record was released on American Standard Records in 1982. The styles vary a bit: Insomnia is a midtempo mix of psychedelic and goth (similar to Red Temple Spirits or their predecessor, Ministry of Love); Johannesburg is dark new wave; Show No Emotion is more like a dancey funk-punk song. Obliquely chronicling one man’s overcoming of darkness, Cult of Youth’s new 20 minute long vinyl outing is a concise and powerful statement of kickass dark-folk intent.

The acoustic guitars hit like uppercuts, the bass growls and roars, the percussion pummels and sways. There’s a powerful spirit of resolve binding these songs together, a firmed up jaw line, a militant aspiration to positive overcoming: “we submit to our fears for no man!”

Yet there’s also a swagger and a sway, with almost Latin feels flowing through the folk-punk aggression. At times the arrangements – which include piano, horns, and some pretty wild electric guitar – get pretty complex, opening up fields of voices, though always with a decisive sense of direction. This is the hard core end of folk, yet at the same time it grooves: body music par excellence.

Of course rising over the instrumentation are some very unique vocals. Masculine and raw, often veering south of in tune yet never grating, there’s a distilled honesty and vulnerability to the singer’s performance: this sort of deep intensity simply cannot be faked. The choruses of voices that appear at times evoke an almost tribal atmosphere.

This is definitely folk music, but being flecked as it is with a gritty urban atmosphere I would plot it almost at the punk (I mean the real, original punk) end of the musical spectrum. As such it might not appeal to the listener looking for a hit of yesteryear nostalgia, but it sure will catch the attention for anyone with an ear for original, raw, powerful, and artfully composed music.

The Germs were approached to provide the music for the movie CRUISING which Al Pacino goes undercover in the NYC Gay leather`bondage/SM/BD 'subculture' to infiltrate a killer who has been murdering gay male prostitutes whilst having rough sex (you REALLY oughta see this movie for 2 reasons: Al Pacino wearing leather and a strapping muscular black man wearing only a jockstrap and a cowboy hat laying a heart bitch slap on Mr. Pacino)

but only one of the songs actually made it onto the soundtrack ("lion's share")

so what you get on this 7" are all of the other songs

The Chameleons (called The Chameleons UK on some American releases) were a post-punk band that formed in Middleton, in Greater Manchester, England in 1981. They consisted of singer and bassist Mark Burgess, guitarist Reg Smithies, guitarist Dave Fielding, and drummer John Lever (replacing original drummer Brian Schofield). The core quartet were sometimes augmented live by keyboardists Alistair Lewthwaite and Andy Clegg in the 1980s, and percussionist/vocalist Kwasi Asante during their reunion period (ex-Magazine drummer Martin Jackson also briefly replaced Lever during 1982-83 while the latter was on sabbatical).
Through Mark Burgess' vocals and dark and ironic lyrics, their songs often dealt with personal themes of childlike innocence and a reverence for nostalgia. Musically, perhaps most notable in their work was the band's innovative and distinctive use of dual guitar melodies, courtesy of Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding, as opposed to the traditional rhythm-and-lead guitarist format prevalent in rock music even to this day. These arrangements were often characterized by the use of delay and chorus effects.

The band initially released three studio albums in the 1980s, following 1981 debut single "In Shreds" (the fruit of a brief signing to Epic), and several radio sessions for late legendary Radio 1 DJ John Peel. The Chameleons released their first full-length studio LP, the critically-acclaimed Script of the Bridge, on the Statik label in 1983. The album features a blend of rhythmic electric guitar textures, providing a moody and intense backdrop for Mark Burgess' haunting vocals. After their third release, 1986's Strange Times and the 1987 sudden death of band manager Tony Fletcher, they abruptly disbanded. Burgess then fronted The Sun and the Moon (with Lever), who issued only one eponymous album on Geffen in 1988, followed by an array of solo projects. Guitarists Fielding and Smithies formed The Reegs, who released two albums: Return of the Sea Monkeys (1991) and Rock the Magic Rock' (1993). John Lever later joined Bushart, who released the album Yesterday is History (2008).

The Chameleons were, for all practical purposes, extinct for well over a decade before a small series of successful live dates in 2000 and the concurrent release of the album Strip (which reworked older material in an acoustic format). After a final studio album, 2001's Why Call It Anything?, another unplugged album (This Never Ending Now), and a successful reunion tour which took them across Europe and the United States, the band dissolved once again in early 2003 due to personal differences.

Although The Chameleons never attained the level of commercial success or fame enjoyed by their contemporaries (e.g. The Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen), their body of work is still critically acclaimed within the music press and influenced bands as diverse as Kitchens of Distinction, Puressence, Interpol, and Editors.

"Strange Times", released in 1986, is the third album released by The Chameleons. Initial American pressings of the record came with a bonus 12" with six additional tracks, two of which are covers; the American cassette also had the same bonus tracks, split up so that each side of the cassette contained half of the bonus tracks.

The album was never released on CD in any territory until 1993. Although Geffen released it as a two-disc set with all of the bonus tracks in the United Kingdom and Germany, the decision was made to omit one of the bonus tracks ("Ever After") from the American version to facilitate its release on a single disc.

Time Bomb

This compilation, recorded in 1981, is the SoCal equivalent of Flex Your Head, the classic DC hardcore compilation. Early tracks from Social Distortion and Red Cross (later Red Kross), as well as the lesser known but equally influential 45 Grave and Christian Death. Other bands include Legal Weapon, Modern Warfare, Secret Hate, Conservatives, 100 Flowers, Rhino 39, and Super Heroines. Why did some of these bands go on to be legends and others fade into obscurity? Fate is fickle, as they say. Reportedly recorded for $550 dollars, this is a great example of the DIY ethic that evolved into today's thriving indie record scene. Every fan of old school punk should own this. Ari Up, lead singer for the British punk band the Slits that would influence decades of female punk artists, died Oct. 20 at the age of 48. No cause was given, but she has battled with a severe illness for some time.

The Slits started as an all-female punk act scene in 1976, with a line-up which eventually included Palmolive (Paloma Romero), Viv Albertine and Tessa Pollitt. Seen as the band's most flamboyant member, her wild hair and vivid stage clothes cemented the image of the Slits as much as the cover of the debut in which the women posed topless covered in mud.

The band, which would eventually add Budgie from Siouxsie and the Banshees on drums, were among the first punk acts to incorporate dub reggae into their sound. They opened shows for the Clash in 1977, which led to them signing with Island Records and recording that debut album, "Cut," for release in 1979.

After the Slits broke up in 1981, Ari Up moved with her husband and twin children to Indonesia, Belize and eventually Jamaica. She continued to make music under her own name and with the New Age Steppers, Baby Ari and Madussa. After releasing a solo album in 2005, she re-formed the Slits in 2006. Their most recent album was 2009's "Trapped Animal."

Her manager of 20 years, Jeff Jacquin, said: "She influenced generations of women and created some of the most memorable music of our time, but Ari's true magic was how she affected people on the street, face to face every day. She ate life up and spit it out, she lived it on her own terms and never gave an inch."

Born Ariane Forester, she was the granddaughter of a the owner of the German newspaper Der Spiegel. Her mother Nora was well-known among musicians -- Jimi Hendrix was among her friends -- and her Munich home was a haven for bands throughout Ari's childhood. Nora, who survives her, along with Ari's three children, is married to John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten.

"She was fearless, pushing the boundaries of music in unprecedented ways," said Shahin Ewalt of Narnack Records, which released the last Slits album. "You can hear her direct influence in punk, indie and reggae over the course of the past three decades."

Code Of Honor formed in San Francisco in late 1981 after the sudden end of the hardcore punk band Sick Pleasure, when guitarist Mike Fox, bassist Dave Chavez, and drummer Sal Paradise were left without a singer. The following is from a band history written by Mike "During Sick Pleasure's activity, I kept producing bands and Steve and I kept releasing records, including two separate Society Dog singles. We both dug them. Their singer, a friend of Steve's named Johnny [aka Johnithin Christ], needed a place to live, and since we had a room for rent at Guy Place, he moved in. One day he was in my room and noticed the "code of honor" poster I had drawn, said that "code of honor" would be a good song title, and I agreed. We worked out lyrics that encapsulated my code of honor, deciding to name a band that too. I called Dave to ask if he would play bass, he agreed, and Sal agreed to be the drummer. We recorded several songs right away, enough for half an album. I didn't want to ditch the Sick Pleasure recordings, so we released an LP with Code Of Honor on one side and Sick Pleasure on the other. "In 1982 we did a US tour with Fear, but after the Seattle show Fear split from the tour when Lee Ving's agent called and told him he got the part of the sleazy guy in "Flashdance." We were booked in Canada for 2 weeks at 3 venues. One venue was a good place to make some much needed bucks. Were booked for 7 days, 2 shows a night, food, crash pad and a great way to build up $ so we could play more states & towns with very small scenes. "I had some of the best times doing gigs in out_of_the way bars or halls. At one gig we did in Oklahoma, this cool guy with a giant mohawk met us as soon as we arrived. He took us to his house, and said what he had, we could use. He looked very bizarre for 1982 Oklahoma, where everybody in town dressed in overalls or polyester suits. The gig had a square bar with rednecks filling seats. There was a pretty big dance floor, no stage. What was cool was we played on the same floor as the audience and there were only 20_30 punks, but they knew the words to songs from our first album and sang along and danced and pogoed. Even the regulars at the bar were dancing and carrying on, all 18 of them, and actually gave the punks some competition grooving, gyrating and pogoing along with everybody else. As a matter of fact everyone, especially the bartender/part_owner as well as regulars at the bar were very courteous, accepting, open minded and helpful. We played through the USA, SF to New York, back thru Texas and New Mexico on that tour. "Bands we played with at one time or another included The Exploited, Suicidal Tendencies, Black Flag, DRI, Bad Religion, Fear, Black Humor, Jody Foster's Army, DOA, TSOL, Los Olvidados, MDC, No Alternative, The Offenders, Go Gos, Flipper, Bad Brains, Urban Assault, Tales of Terror, Free Beer, X, Fifth Column, Tanks, Weirdos, Circle Jerks, VS, The Afflicted, Agent Orange, Faction, Twisted Roots, Seizure, Middle Class, Wasted Youth, Fang, Toxic Reasons, The Lewd, Rebel Truth, Wounds, Bags, Alley Cats, Straw Dogs, Minimal Man, Crucifix, Deadly Reign, Spikes, VKTMS, Fuck Ups, Battalion of Saints, Ribsy, The Damned, Sex Gang Children, Gun Club, Subhumans, Big Boys, Legionnaire's Disease, Poison Idea, Sado Nation, Husker Du, Cramps, Ramones, Mau Maus, Misfits, and the Adolescents. "Around '80_'83 most of the great Southern California bands were banned from playing because of riots and attacks by Nazi jocks and the cops, so we got them playing here in San Francisco to escape the fascist pigs and government in LA. At every gig we played in LA, the cops busted the show and some heads.

Smersh was Mike Mangino and Chris Shepard. And from 1981 until 1994 they released far too many cassette tapes. They also contributed to far too many compilations throughout the known world. In the early eighties they established a unique sound that is known and loved, combining cheap electronics and wild guitar sounds with distorted vocals. They were in fact a bit The Ramones of the industrial scene. But were they industrial? The Smersh sound had so many faces that it is next to impossible to categorize their music. Smersh recorded on most monday evenings for a couple of hours. Each song was improvised over the course of the evening and then recorded. Once it was finished they never played it again. They never rehearsed, they couldn't read music, and they never played live.

With hindsight, the most important group to have emerged from the extremist English Punk scene may well be Rudimentary Peni. Led by a genuine obsessive, Nick Blinko, this trio (Blinko, Grant Matthews on bass and John Greville on drums) from Abbots Langley, the small town near London which produced England's only Pope, stand apart from the mass of hardcore groups not so much for the violence and brevity of their songs (which, incidentally, are hard to beat) as for the absolute essentiality of their music, their rhythmic variety and their above-average grasp of melody.

Their first two EPs are an unprecedented, full-frontal attack which few can match; Rudimentary Peni (Outer Himalayan), recorded in 1981, contains twelve tracks, each faster and more deafening than the last. In raw, violent anthems like Media Person, B-Ward and Play, Blinko speeds up Joey Ramone's `Ramalama' and Johnny Rotten's invective, deforming them with his own guttural caprices, somewhere between a werewolf in heat and a native American shaman. The Peni's refusal to waste a single second of music might hint at a certain monotony, but there is actually much more variety than one might imagine, and in songs like Teenage Time Killer and Him Hymn, it is the unusual guitar riffs which drive the harmony. Each track has a precise identity, and throughout the record, a `black' vein of esotericism continues to emerge (in Gardener, the group even attempts a kind of raga-punk).

KABC (Los Angeles) on the 'new menace' to the teenagers of America...That menace being Punk Rock...Over and all its a rather one sided yet seriously exploitive expose on the Punk Rock culture w/ commentaries & interviews fr. Lee Ving (FEAR); Although nearly 30 years later I look back on this and I see the propaganda factor of it all,The blatant scare tactics set w/ 'what to look for' "signs" and second hand recollections of those in 'the scene' I then was a precocious & rather angry 12 year old, recently dealing w/ the death of my Father of Cancer due to exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam..living in suburbia, hating school, parent(s),authority,AND still struggling with my sexuality...This I later come to find out were the active ingredients to a life involving Punk Rock. Still wet behind the ears just getting into Punk Rock music....This Docu-Propaganda/Expose reinforced the fact that I HAD to rebel. The music spoke to ME in insurmountable ways;

I remember watching this w/ my Mom, and the look of fear & horror in her eyes as she watched this show, looking at me, then back at the T.V., then at me again, little did she know that THIS menace was EXACTLY what her 'baby' was looking for! Funny enough at that time I had faded blue closely cropped buzzcut and a safety pin in my ear..A typical 'uniform; to being punk rock, She was becoming incresingly concerned over my 'style' of dress...Jack Boots, Ripped Levis,Flannels and T-Shirts that read Black Flag,Social Distortion,Flipper..etc...before this Documentary she was seriously clueless...Bless her heart THAT was life in the good ole' Orange County

Derf Scratch, original bassist for Los Angeles punk band Fear, passed away on July 28 due to complications from an unknown illness, the OC Weekly reports. Although Fear continues to work today under original guitarist/vocalist Lee Ving, the band underwent numerous lineup changes over the last 30-plus years, with Scratch playing in the band's most fruitful period, 1977-1982.

Born Frederick Milner, Scratch helped raise Fear's profile in the late '70s and early '80s by befriending punk rock fan John Belushi. The actor became such a supporter of the band, he secured them as a musical guest on the 1981 Halloween episode of 'Saturday Night Live.' One of the more notorious performances in 'SNL' history, Fear and their crowd of moshing, brawling fans, which included Belushi and Fugazi's Ian MacKaye, caused $20,000 worth of damage.

Ving eventually fired Scratch from the band a short time after their 1982 debut album, 'The Record,' was released. In a 2004 interview with Mark Prindle, Scratch revealed his post Fear career included a band called Scratch and another later band called Derf Scratch and Friends. In 2006, he was in a bad car accident following a gig of another new act he was playing with called the Werewolfs.

Crisis started out in the late 70s with the rise of the British hardcore punk movement. They were at the forefront of the political take on punk, all of their songs being about the state of the UK and its government and anti Nazism (which will get interesting). They would release several singles, EPs and an LP. They were very comparable to and probably were on the bill with bands like Warsaw, UK Decay, The Royal Family (Dave Roberts), and numerous Crass camp bands. There was a re-release of their 7" and EP material on CD some years ago.

They took a different approach to punk, while the music was still aggressive, it was rhythmic, structured, and poetic - not merely powerchord thrash. After their split, Luke Rendall went on to Theatre of Hate, and Lester Jones played with Carcrash International (Dave Roberts/Sex Gang Children) and Quick Gas Gang (Andi Sex Gang), but most notably, Tony Wakeford and Douglas Pierce went on to form Death In June. The Death In June song "All Alone In Her Nirvana" was written by Doulas and Tony as a Crisis song. DIJ was one of the most acclaimed and collectable bands in a genre that escapes definition other than some sort of brilliant mix of apocalyptic folk gothic punk, with experimental elements using non traditional sounds and instruments. Their peers were bands like Psychic TV, Current 93, and Throbbing Gristle. Tony Wakeford split and created Sol Invictus a bit after his involvemnt with DIJ.

After Crisis, bands Death In June, Sol Invictus, and others came from the wreckage. The funny thing is, Crisis began as a dramatically anti-fascist band, but as time progressed, the members increasingly romanticized German WWII imagery and themes and the line between fascism blurred, DIJ often being referred to by those not in the know as a straight on Nazi band. The Crisis song "White Youth" was even at one point taken at face value by a member of the music press who didn't bother to listen to it. On a side note, the same thing happened and still happens with Black Flag's "White Minority", by those who don't know the song was sung by a Hispanic singer! In the depths of January 1981, BETTINA KOESTER and GUDRUN GUT stepped from the smoldering ashes of their previous band MANIA D shouldering the yoke of a feverish new project they called MALARIA!. And with the release of the maxi EP "Malaria!" in April that year, the fever spread. The band filled out to include MANON P. DUURSMA, NL ("O.U.T." an early Nina Hagen project), CHRISTINE HAHN, USA (Static, Glen Branca) and SUSANNE KUHNKE, BRD (Die Haut) absorbing their diverse backgrounds and personalities and grew. A first European tour followed during which they appeared on a John Peel session for the BBC and later recorded the single "How do you like my new dog?" for the Belgium label Les Disques du Crepuscule. Malaria toured the US next appearing with The Birthday Party, John Cale, and one unforgettable gig together with Nina Hagen in New York's infamous Studio 54 night club. This tour was the first that promoted New German Music in the United States. Meanwhile Malaria recorded the 12" "New York Passage (Your turn to run)" for Cachalot records which went on to reach the independent top 10 in the U.S. as well as in Europe. During another tour of Europe the band gave birth to "White Water" a 12" long player including "Kaltes Klares Wasser" which went on to become an Indi-classic. In 1982 Malaria released to critical acclaim their first album, "Emotion". It was licensed to Nippon Columbia in Japan and the video "Geld/Money" (directed by B.Buehler and D.Hormel) won prizes for its innovative editing style. Tours of England, France, Benelux, Italy and Scandinavia followed.

We gotta face it here, the Brits had the lock on both the fashion and the music in the early eighties. The mod black and white trend, in both color of fabric and players, with it's island beat and strong horn sections got people up and moving on the dance floor. And it didn't sacrifice it's edge for the sake of a danceable hook or a pleasant pop tune. There were strong opinions here along with the driving bass beats and such. A jacket, a hat and a pair of distinctive shades are the uniform of the day. This collection is a good look at the cream of the crop. A pair of tasseled loafers and some crazy checked socks on the front cover let you in on the game and if that's not enough there's a group of photos on the other side to get you a little closer to the action. Slip this one onto the record-changer at your next hop and see the kids hit the floor and skank, wiggle and pogo the night away.

During Frightwig's influential history they had many line up changes. Deanna (bass) and Mia (vocals&guitar) formed the band in San Francisco in 1983 because they were bored with the cheezy male dominated rock scene and the growing number of "hair" bands. The duo were then joined by Cecilia (drums) and were now ready to kick serious ass! 1984 saw the release of their debut album 'Cat Farm Faboo' and the inclusion of an extra guitarist called Susan. Extensive touring provided an opportunity for Frightwig to gain themselves an irresistable and infamous live reputation. Their shows included the worshiping of women and the band ordering male members of the audience to dance naked (!). Described by one reviewer as "Beautiful, noisy chaos" and "loud women with foul mouths, big songs and fat attitudes". The wild women set an example that was to influence many other bands such as L7, Babes in Toyland, Faith No More and Hole. 1986 saw Rebecca replace Mia (who was pregnant) and the band recorded their second album 'Faster Frightwig Kill Kill!'. However Rebecca decided to quit due to pregnancy, followed by Cecilia who went for therapy. BUT the band were not finished yet and in 1989 Rebecca and Deanna reformed the band with a new drummer (Lyn Perko from Sister Double Happiness). They were together long enough to record the 'Phone Sexy mini album! Sadly Rebecca and Deanna joined Cecilia in the Betty Ford Center, whilst Lynn rejoined her old band. The most psychotic, beautiful and cathartic band of the 80's was dead. However their attitude, wit and determinism to break boundaries became the blueprint for the early 90's alternative scene. Courtney Love went as far as to say that without Frightwig "there would be no Hole, no Babes in Toyland no riot grrl and no PJ Harvey". Whilst L7, Bikini Kill and The Butthole Surfers have also made clear their admiration for one of the most intelligent, ferocious and provocative bands ever

I was first exposed to Back From Samoa when I was 13 years old and I remember (his name was ) Dan Vail growing up in Anaheim California he was 16 at the time I believe, we would often skip school to go record shopping at Beggars Banquet in Garden Grove,Tower Records in Buena Park,Vinyl Fetish on Melrose (L.A.) and Peer Records in Newport Beach,Those were some memories I will not soon forget..We became tight instantly...some may even say inseperable Hell he even managed to get me my first fake I.D. to get into (punkrock ) shows in Hollywood (which was notorious for 18-21+ shows...)He even took me to my first Punk gig Im almost certain it was a Reagan Youth & Bad Brains show in Los Angeles in 1983 @The Olympic Auditorium. The very first time I heard Angry Samoans Back From Samoa was immediately in love There were many factors that caught my ear be it the humor, anger..or just the good old fashioned tongue and cheek comedy..I couldnt tell you if it was the 3 chord riffing, the snotty vocals but this record would more often than not, find us slam dancing in my bedroom everytime we listened to this. My Mom would often flip out because she would think we were fighting, she caught on eventually LOL. But Ill never forget him for turning me onto this, and many other bands, styles of music He was quite a knowledgable guy,.....I eventually moved to Massachusetts after High School, in 1989 therefore temporarily losing touch with Dan..A few weeks later I called him to catch up on this and that, I was greeted with a tearful Family member informing me that Dan had died earlier that morning of an accidental drug overdose , I still miss him to this very day R.I.P. Dan .

This was a double 7" compilation released on Duophonic in 1993 in a limited edition of 1200. Also on the comp were Stereolab, Colm & Darlin. This release is really rare and I wouldn't want to battle Stereolab fans on an auction site for it. These tracks are bedroom quality experiments in poetry, noise, and song. The answering machine sample mentions the Hickey Underworld, something I remember Nation Of Ulyssess referencing in their radical surreal manifestos.

Only a handful of these were pressed Chainsaw Records from Portland (leaders of the Riot Grrrl movement) and the band contains many important players including Kathleen Hanna of BIKINI KILL. Record contains 19 brilliant tracks and remain in near mint condition. An important piece of Riot Grrrl/Queercore history and a truly rare collectable that will continue to grow in value. This is a recording of Heavens To Betsy's first demo tape. Heavens To Betsy were made up of Tracey Sawyer and Corin Tucker (later of Sleater-Kinney fame). The group was born during the full rage of the riot grrrl scene in Portland in the early 90s.

The songs include the various themes that riot grrrl was interested in e.g. sexism, rape and domestic violence. Corin even mentioned in an interview that she based her vocal style, in the early days, on Kathleen Hanna's, of Bikini Kill fame, infamous scream.

The recording is from a cassette so the quality isn't too good but it's worth it to hear rare songs.

Heavens to Betsy was a punk band from Olympia, Washington. The members were Tracy Sawyer on drums and occasionally bass guitar, and Corin Tucker on guitar and vocals. One of their first appearances was at the International Pop Underground Convention organized by independent record label K Records in 1991. For one night an all-female bill, dubbed "Love Rock Revolution Girl Style Now" commanded the stage with Heavens to Betsy, Bratmobile, Jean Smith of Mecca Normal and 7 Year Bitch appearing, an event that is widely considered one of the pivotal events in the inception of the Riot Grrrl movement. Their first record was a split single on K Records with Bratmobile, considered an essential Riot Grrrl recording. The band recorded three singles, produced one LP/CD, Calculated, and contributed to many compilations while they were together. These recordings are now sought after by collectors. One of these compilations, Free to Fight, also included a song contributed by the band Excuse 17, of which Carrie Brownstein was a member. Corin and Carrie began to play together, and when Heavens to Betsy disbanded in the mid 1990s, the two women founded Sleater-Kinney.

Jo and Kathleen met in Portland, Oregon about ten years ago at a Bikini Kill show. Jo thought Kathleen's band was startling and great so she gave Kathleen her zine (Snarla) after the show. Kathleen's affection for Jo's writing was so strong that when she moved to Portland during a Bikini Kill hiatus, she found out where Jo worked and went there to seek her out. The two became fast friends and stayed in touch for years, finally ending up together once again in New York. In September of 1999, (after separately taking note of JD through mutual feminist friends) we ran into JD while we were on our way to get our photo taken. Sadie introduced us all, and we stopped on St. Marks for a minute and looked into each other’s eyes. Maybe it was the location, maybe it was the planets, but it was then that our collective subconscious took control and magnetized us to each other forever. After this magical meeting on the street. The three of us, (Kathleen, JD, and Johanna) all happened to be at the same Halloween party in Dumbo, Brooklyn to see our mutual friend, Dasha, play records. The night was full of all kinds of party drama which led to a creepy and crowded elevator ride together. We finally ended up on the side of the street watching two people dressed up as dead Princess Diana and the girl from ‘Sweet Valley High’ physically fight over cabs. This was only the beginning of what we were yet to see together.
We started in 1998, when Kathleen moved to New York. Having just put out her first solo record, Julie Ruin, it seemed logical to try and translate that album into a live show. Not wanting to perform alone, she asked Jo to help her with the project. (Jo had just bought a sampler and was getting into home recording too).Earlier that year Kathleen had gone to Chicago and made a video for the Julie Ruin song "Aerobicide" with her friend Sadie Benning. Sadie expressed interest in doing visuals and/or helping with the music for the live performances Kathleen was planning. So back in New York, Jo and Kathleen worked hard, trying to re-shape the Julie Ruin material into a live show, but ended up writing new songs together instead. They sent cassette tapes of what they were making to Sadie in Chicago and she visited New York and began working with them on their new, as-yet-unnamed project. This material ultimately became the first Le Tigre album.Because we wanted to have a visual component to accompany our live performance (and couldn't afford to buy a video projector) we made a slide-show that had to be manually triggered. Our first show was on a snowy night at a collectively run queer art/performance space in Brooklyn called Dumba. The line-up at that time was Kathleen, Jo, & Sadie, with JD Samson running the slide projector. JD came on tour with the band as the slide technician/roadie, but it was immediately apparent that she should have a more active role in the performances. We were already talking about having her dance and sing back-ups with us on stage when Sadie decided she didn't want to be in Le Tigre anymore. Since a month long US tour was already booked and Jo had quit her job to do it, we asked JD if she would become a full-fledged member of Le Tigre. Luckily she said "yes". JD added an undeniable flair and charisma to the live show and took to touring and recording like a fish to water. Since then we have put out three records and gone on 8 tours, and now we have a video projector and two crew members to make our team complete: Dusty Lombardo, the best merch-selling video tech around; and Killer, the sound woman everyone wants to steal!

I broke down a week or so ago and purchased a Cassette Deck USB which just arrived today..I am seriously considering transferring about 150-200 Cassettes that consist of demos, outtakes rare material etc keep your eye out for upcoming posts Geko (TDK -lofi-demo ) Bikini Kill (demo 'Revolution Girl Style Now'), Nico 'Live In Denmark' (ROIR Cass.),Smersh 'Caracas' demo (Atlas King Records) (cass.split demo)etc..etc..tons of rare and hard to find music...I think Ill do a once a week post...If anyone has any feedback let me know..

Richard X started his career in the underground music scene creating popular bootlegs. Richard states “which are illegal, under the counter remixes which combined two existing records to make an entirely new song.”

Under the pseudonym Girls On Top, Richard X released a series of vinyl only underground singles. He says bootlegs were “escaping from that world of formatting – which the DJ culture and club culture relies on so much. They were supposed to be the future of pop music.”

The first two 7″ records by Girls On Top became singles of the week in the N.M.E.

I stumbled across this duo on YouTube meerly by accident called Capsule. I automatically thought of Pizzicato Five.....kinda updated to a 2009-2010 feel...I have never heard of them surprisingly before today...But what I have heard, seen I adore..Therefore,Ill be looking for more material by Capsule in the VERY NEAR future!
Highly sample heavy cuts combined with daft electro with the cute voice of Toshiko. Some people claim they sound like Perfume, you decide. Some have toted that Capsule have that whole J-Pop sound I dtrongly disagree They have been around since 2001, and have quite a wicked sense of musical style and taste.....
